Amos Mac is currently a staff writer on the forthcoming drama series Gossip Girl (HBO Max, 2020). As an out transgender writer, Mac’s work explores identity, community and chosen family though a queer lens. Mac has worked on shows including Amazon’s Transparent, AMC’s The Son, and VICELAND’s Gaycation. In 2019, along with Aisling Chin-Yee, Mac co-wrote a hybrid documentary-drama, Billy Tipton, for Parabola Films. This feature focuses on the true story of a jazz musician who came of age in 1930s America and was outed as a trans man after his death in 1989. Before working in television Amos was best known as the founding editor of Original Plumbing; the first print magazine in America dedicated to trans male culture. From 2009-2019, OP was an informational and humorous slice of trans guy reality that prided itself on an artful yet cheeky documentation of community. The official book, Original Plumbing: The Best of Ten Years of Trans Male Culture, was released in May 2019 by the Feminist Press. Mac’s photographic images have been featured in publications including The New York Times, Interview, Vogue Italia, Capricious, Dazed and Confused and OUT, and exhibited at venues internationally, including Daniel Cooney Fine Art, The San Francisco Public Library, Luis De Jesus Los Angeles, International Center of Photography, Leslie-Lohman Museum, and National Museums Scotland (forthcoming). Past projects of note include photographing the groundbreaking Fall ’15 campaign for Swedish fashion brand & Other Stories, featuring an all trans cast and crew, and the iconic collaborative series he created with artist Zackary Drucker, which formed the content of his art publication Translady Fanzine. An alternative selection of the images was exhibited in 2011 as Distance is Where the Heart is, Home is Where you Hang Your Heart, at Luis De Jesus Los Angeles. Amos Mac was a 2018 Lambda Literary Writer’s Retreat Fellow for Young Adult fiction. His personal story was featured in the HBO documentary The Trans List, and he’s been honored on the OUT 100 and the TRANS 100.
